Mesoamerica Platform Maritime Connectivity

By Sergio G. Estrada, CEO of IMPULSORA, March 12, 2025

The Mesoamerican region, in its role as a major commercial and logistical hub in Latin America, faces the challenge of improving the efficiency of its transportation infrastructure to strengthen supply chains and facilitate international trade. In this context, the proposal to establish a short-distance maritime route between Puerto Cortés in Honduras and Puerto Progreso in Mexico emerges as a strategic opportunity to optimize regional and global connectivity, reducing transit times and logistical costs.
Puerto Cortés, the main commercial port in Honduras and one of the most important in the Caribbean, has been consolidated as a key hub for international trade. For its part, Puerto Progreso, located on the Yucatán Peninsula, has been developing its port infrastructure with the goal of becoming a benchmark logistics center in southeastern Mexico. This geographical proximity and the natural synergies between the two ports open up the possibility of creating an efficient, direct, and competitive maritime route.
This project not only has the potential to strengthen commercial exchange between Central America and southeastern Mexico but also aligns with the objectives of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT), an ambitious initiative of the Mexican government that seeks to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through modernized logistics and transportation infrastructure. By integrating Puerto Cortés and Puerto Progreso into this corridor, the project contributes to the creation of a more efficient interoceanic transportation corridor, complementing the commercial routes that cross Mexico from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico.
This maritime route would enhance the response capacity of both ports, strengthening regional and global competitiveness. The connection will allow for more efficient use of existing infrastructure at both ports and will facilitate the movement of goods to and from the Interoceanic Corridor, positioning the region as a strategic point within the global trade network. This project represents a key opportunity to transform the region’s logistical infrastructure, promoting economic growth, market integration, and stronger connectivity in Mesoamerica. At the same time, it would help position the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as an even more competitive interoceanic bridge, efficiently integrating the economies of Central America and southeastern Mexico into the global economy.
